Tuesday, November 28: Journal 7; take notes over American Romanticism; read and discuss pp. 230-237.  Sign out books; if you already have a book checked out, bring you still need to sign it out again.

 

Thursday, November 30: Vocabulary 9; Journal 8; read and discuss pp. 240-241; read and annotate (notes in book over questions, point of view, and characterization; and the general characteristics and concerns of Romanticism [in your notes]) “The Devil and Tom Walker” pp. 242-252.

 

, December 1: Journal 9; share thoughts and discuss elements in “The Devil and Tom Walker”. 

 

Tuesday, December 5: Journal 10; begin watching Sleepy Hollow.  While this Tim Burton takes many liberties in his retelling of this popular tale by Irving, he remains true to Irving’s basic theme: the increasing American concern for property was destroying our spiritual power, and his style: experimentation with Gothic tales, but in a humorous way, and gives Americans an opportunity to laugh at ourselves which is important after an era when we took everything so seriously and logically.  While watching the movie take notes the characters and scenes that reveal Irving ’s themes and style (these notes will be collected for a participation grade).  Take pay attention and take good notes because you will write an essay.

 

Thursday, December 7: Vocabulary 10; journal 11; review the scenes and notes from Tuesday.  Continue Sleepy Hollow (and notes).

 

Monday, December 11: Journal 12; review the scenes and notes from Thursday; and finish Sleepy Hollow.  Share reactions, thoughts, and notes about the movie and begin writing the essay.

 

Wednesday, December 13: Journal 13; work on and share ideas about your Sleepy Hollow essays.  For help on developing an essay (introduction, body, and conclusion) refer to the Writer’s INC books. 

 

Friday, December 15: Vocabulary 11; journal 14; finish writing the Sleepy Hollow essays.  Essays due Tuesday.

 

Thursday, December 21: Journal 15; Read about the Fireside Poets pp. 264-265 and poems on 264-280 annotating for Romantic traits.

 

Tuesday, January 2: Journal 16; Review Romanticism and Fireside poets.  Introduce James Fennimore Cooper’s Last of the Mohican’s and assignment.  Begin watching film (remember, pay attention and take good notes because you will be writing an essay)

 

Thursday, January 4: Journal 17; review LOTM scenes and Romantic themes; continue the film.

 

Monday, January 8: Journal 18: review LOTM scenes and Romantic themes; continue the film.

 

Wednesday, January 10: Journal 19: review LOTM scenes and Romantic themes; finish the film, and begin writing your essay.

 

Friday, January 12: Vocabulary 12; journal 20, and finish your essay.  Last of the Mohican’s essay is due Tuesday, January 16.

 

Tuesday, January 16: Study for semester test.
