Read Edith Hamilton’s Mythology
and complete the assignment. As with Sophie’s World, I do not suggest reading in one sitting.
The book contains a wealth of information that will be lost if not
given time to digest. You
will need to keep a reading journal for this book as well.
It can be the same notebook used for Sophie’s
World. You may be
surprised with the connections you can make between the two texts.
The advice for reading this book is the same as the other. Assignment Rational: Without knowledge of mythology much of the elegant
literature of our own language cannot be understood and appreciated.
Along with the Bible, mythology is one of the most popular
allusions within literature. Most,
if not all, of the literature studied in this class will have some sort of
mythical allusion, Sophie’s World
included. Edith Hamilton’s
book will not only provide a foundation for your literature studies, but
will also serve as a reference guide throughout the year.
The “Myth” Assignment: Complete
the Mythology Study Guide.
This study guide must be handed in the first day of class; there
will also be a comprehensive test over this book.
